Getting Your Alfresco Ready for Summer: A Newcastle Checklist

Summer in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie means long evenings outside, if your alfresco is set up for it. A space that feels perfect in September can be too hot by 4pm in January, too windy for dinner, or overrun with mozzies once the sun goes down.

Run through this checklist in spring so your outdoor area is ready when the heat arrives. Most of it takes ten minutes of watching and noting, and it will tell you exactly what you need before you talk to anyone about screens or awnings.

1. Sort the western sun

Stand in your alfresco at 4pm on a warm day. If you are squinting or the tiles are hot underfoot, you need shade on that side.

Low afternoon sun comes in under the roofline, so a pergola or patio roof alone rarely stops it. Sunscreen mesh zip screens cut glare and heat while keeping the view, which matters if you look out over the lake, the bush or your own backyard. If you want shade that projects out rather than dropping straight down, a folding arm awning is worth considering for open decks.

2. Check where the wind comes from

Afternoon nor'easters and evening southerlies can empty an alfresco fast. Take note of which sides catch the breeze and how strong it gets.

Blinds held in side tracks stay put where strapped blinds flap. Zip screens lock the fabric edge into a channel, so the screen stays tensioned and quiet instead of billowing. For more sheltered spots, straight drop awnings can be a simple and effective option.

3. Plan for summer storms

Summer storms roll in quickly across the Hunter, often in the late afternoon. By the time you notice the sky turning, you may only have a few minutes.

Motorised screens can be dropped from inside in seconds, so you are not wrestling with cranks in the rain. If you are choosing fabric, waterproof options give better protection for outdoor furniture and cushions, while sunscreen mesh lets air flow through on calmer days.

4. Keep the bugs out

Dusk is when mozzies and midges arrive, especially in homes close to the lake, creeks or bushland. That is often exactly when you want to be sitting outside.

A fully enclosed, screened alfresco lets you stay outside after dark. When every opening has a screen running in side tracks, there are far fewer gaps for insects to get through.

5. Think about privacy

If neighbours look into your yard, or your alfresco faces a street or walking path, privacy can make a big difference to how often you actually use the space.

Mesh screens give daytime privacy without making the space feel closed in. From outside, the mesh is harder to see through in daylight, while from inside you still keep a clear view out.

6. Clean and check what you have

Before buying anything new, hose down existing blinds and awnings, check fabric for wear and make sure motors and cranks run smoothly. Look for fraying edges, stiff mechanisms and fabric that has faded or gone brittle.

Worn blinds can often be repaired rather than replaced. A quick check now means any repairs can be sorted before the busy season rather than in the middle of it. It also shows you whether you need new shade at all, or just a tidy up of what is already there.

7. Book early
