What are folding arm awnings?

A folding arm awning is a retractable fabric awning that mounts to the wall and extends on hinged arms to shade a deck, patio or balcony without posts. It suits open entertaining areas where you want shade on demand and the view back afterwards. CBI Blinds measures and installs every awning, starting with a free in-home measure.

Folding arm awnings mount to the wall and extend out on articulated arms, creating shade over patios, decks, balconies and entertaining areas without posts. When you do not need them, they retract neatly against the wall to keep your view and natural light.

They suit spaces you want to keep open, and they should be retracted in strong wind. Choose manual or motorised operation and a fabric to suit your home. Kyle measures the wall and the projection you need and installs every awning himself.

Are folding arm awnings right for your home?

Folding arm awnings are about flexible shade. Wind one out over the deck for a summer lunch, then retract it flat against the wall so the outdoor area gets full sun in winter and the rooms inside keep their light. Because there are no posts or side channels, nothing gets in the way of the view or the outdoor furniture.

Operation is manual or motorised, and you choose a fabric and frame colour to suit the house. Kyle works out the projection you need, which is how far the awning reaches out from the wall, and checks that the wall is suitable for the fixing, since the arms hold the awning out with nothing supporting it at the front.

They are not a wind or rain barrier. A folding arm awning should be retracted in strong wind, which matters in exposed spots that catch a southerly or a sea breeze. If you want an area enclosed against the weather, zip screens are the better fit, and if you want shade that drops down the side of a patio, a straight drop awning does that job. Some homes use a folding arm awning over the deck with screens at the sides.

At the free in-home measure Kyle looks at the wall, the space and how the sun moves across it through the afternoon, then gives you a fixed written quote on the day.

★★★★★

“We are over the moon with our new remote controlled ZipScreen blinds, after doing a complete renovation of our rear deck space we knew that the old outdoor blinds would not cut it. Suzy and Kyle were wonderful to deal with and the final results look awesome. We are looking forward to year round entertaining.”

FAQ

Folding Arm questions, answered

Are folding arm awnings safe in wind?

They are designed for sun, not strong wind, so retract the awning when the wind picks up. For exposed areas that need protection in any weather, zip screens held in side tracks are the better choice.

Can folding arm awnings be motorised?

Yes. Folding arm awnings come in manual or motorised operation. Motorised is popular on wider awnings because the awning winds in and out at the press of a button, which makes it easy to retract when the wind comes up.

Do folding arm awnings need posts?

No. The awning fixes to the wall and the hinged arms hold the fabric out, so there are no posts on the deck or patio. Kyle checks the wall at the free measure to make sure it suits the fixing.

Folding arm awnings vs straight drop awnings?

A folding arm awning projects out horizontally to shade an area from above. A straight drop awning drops vertically down an opening to block low sun, glare and wind. The right one depends on how the sun comes into the space.

How long does a folding arm awning take to install?

Lead times depend on the size, fabric and operation you choose and are confirmed in your fixed written quote. Kyle installs every awning himself once it has been made to measure.
