What are automatic awnings?

Automatic awnings are window awnings that angle out from the top of a window to keep direct sun off the glass, then retract when you want the light and view back. They suit brick homes with exposed windows and upstairs rooms that overheat. CBI Blinds measures and installs every awning, starting with a free in-home measure and fixed written quote.

Automatic awnings extend and retract as needed, protecting windows and outdoor areas from heat, glare and UV while improving comfort inside. Extended, they stop direct sun before it reaches the glass. Retracted, they keep your outlook and natural light.

They come in auto and pivot arm styles with manual or motorised operation, in plain and striped fabrics to suit your home. Kyle recommends the right style for each window and installs every awning himself.

Are automatic awnings right for your home?

The idea is simple: stop the sun before it hits the glass. Once sunlight is through the window the heat is already in the room, so an awning outside tackles heat that an internal blind can only partly block. Automatic awnings are especially useful on west and north-facing windows that take the afternoon sun.

There are two main styles. Auto awnings lower and angle out over the window, while pivot arm awnings hinge out on arms, which suits upstairs windows on two storey homes such as the one CBI Blinds fitted in Jewells. Both come with manual or motorised operation and in plain or striped fabrics, so you can go classic or keep the look modern. The striped automatic awnings on an Edgeworth brick home are a good example of the classic look.

Compared with a straight drop awning, which hangs vertically and screens an opening from top to bottom, an automatic awning projects outward and keeps some outlook beneath it. It is the better fit for individual windows, while straight drop awnings and zip screens suit patios, verandahs and larger openings.

At the free in-home measure Kyle checks each window, what the awning will fix to and how far it needs to project to shade the glass, then gives you a fixed written quote on the day. He also looks at whether a motor makes sense for upstairs or hard to reach windows.

★★★★★

“We are over the moon with our new remote controlled ZipScreen blinds, after doing a complete renovation of our rear deck space we knew that the old outdoor blinds would not cut it. Suzy and Kyle were wonderful to deal with and the final results look awesome. We are looking forward to year round entertaining.”

FAQ

Automatic Awnings questions, answered

Do window awnings reduce heat inside?

Yes. An awning stops direct sun before it reaches the glass, which keeps rooms noticeably cooler on hot afternoons and reduces glare, while still letting daylight in underneath when the awning is angled out.

Can automatic awnings be motorised?

Yes. Automatic awnings come in manual or motorised operation. Motorised suits upstairs windows and hard to reach spots, since you can extend and retract the awning without leaning out of the window.

What is the difference between auto and pivot arm awnings?

Both angle out to shade the glass, but the arm design differs. Pivot arm awnings hinge out on arms and suit upstairs windows and two storey homes. Kyle recommends the right style for each window at the free measure.

Automatic awnings vs straight drop awnings?

Automatic awnings project out from a window to shade the glass while keeping some view below. Straight drop awnings hang vertically down an opening and suit patios, balconies and verandahs rather than single windows.
