Zip Screen Fabrics Explained: Mesh, Privacy, Waterproof or Clear?

Once you have decided on zip screens, the fabric is the choice that shapes how the space feels every day. It decides how much of the view you keep, how hot the alfresco gets, how private it is and whether you can sit out there in the rain.

CBI Blinds makes zip screens in three families of fabric: sunscreen mesh, privacy fabric and waterproof fabric. Here is how they compare, where clear PVC fits in, and how to choose for homes across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

What is sunscreen mesh and how open is it?

Sunscreen mesh is a woven fabric with tiny openings that let air and some light through. It comes in different openness levels. A more open weave keeps a clearer view out to the yard or the water, while a tighter weave blocks more sun and gives more privacy.

Mesh is the most popular choice for alfrescos because it cuts a large share of the heat and glare, lets the breeze through and dries quickly after rain. From inside you see out, and from outside in daylight it is hard to see in.

When does a privacy fabric make more sense?

If a neighbour's deck, a second storey window or a busy path looks straight into your outdoor area, a denser privacy fabric gives more screening than an open mesh. You give up some of the view and some airflow in exchange.

A common approach is to use privacy fabric only on the side that faces the neighbours and keep a more open mesh on the sides that face the yard.

What does waterproof fabric do differently?

Waterproof fabric blocks rain completely, so the alfresco stays dry in wet weather. The trade off is that it does not breathe, so it can trap heat once the sun comes back out, and it is more solid to look through.

Mesh already stops most wind-driven rain because the side tracks close the gaps, so many homes only use waterproof fabric on the side that takes the worst of the southerly storms. Mixing fabrics across one alfresco is common and gives you the best of both. Our guide on whether outdoor blinds stop rain goes into more detail.

Where does clear PVC fit in?

Clear PVC is the see-through material used in cafe blinds. It keeps the view in wet weather, but it lets the sun straight through, so a west facing area can heat up like a glasshouse. It gives no privacy, and PVC can yellow, cloud and crack over time in strong sun.

If a completely clear view in the rain matters more to you than heat, glare or privacy, it is worth comparing the two products side by side. Our zip screens vs cafe blinds guide covers that choice.

How do the fabrics compare?

  • View: open mesh keeps the most view, while privacy and waterproof fabrics are more solid.
  • Heat and glare: mesh and privacy fabrics block a large share of the sun's heat and glare, while clear PVC lets it through.
  • Airflow: mesh breathes and waterproof fabric does not.
  • Rain: mesh stops most rain in normal conditions, and waterproof fabric stops it completely.
  • Privacy: privacy fabric gives the most, mesh gives daytime privacy and clear PVC gives none.

What happens to privacy at night?

Mesh gives daytime privacy because it is brighter outside than in. At night, with the alfresco lights on, that flips, and people outside can see in more easily. If you entertain after dark and the neighbours are close, a privacy fabric on that side is the better choice.

Does the colour make a difference?

Yes, more than most people expect. Darker colours such as charcoal and dark grey are easier to see through, which keeps the view clearer and cuts glare off water. Lighter colours reflect more heat but look more like a wall from inside. Colour choice rarely changes the price much, so pick the one that suits your home and your outlook.

How do I choose the right fabric for my home?

  • Want the view and the breeze? Start with sunscreen mesh.
  • Overlooked by neighbours? Use privacy fabric on that side.
  • Want to sit out in heavy rain? Add waterproof fabric on the most exposed side.
  • West facing? Choose mesh in a darker colour to cut glare without losing the view.

If you only need shade on a sheltered window or verandah, straight drop awnings come in sunscreen and privacy mesh too, and automatic awnings keep direct sun off the glass. The full range is on our outdoor blinds page.

Can I see the fabrics before I decide?

Yes. Fabric looks different at 4pm on your own patio than in a brochure, so CBI Blinds brings the samples to your home and holds them up against your actual view. Zip screens take about 3 to 4 weeks from measure to install, Christmas orders cut off in early December, and every screen comes with a 5 year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best zip screen fabric?

Sunscreen mesh suits most alfrescos because it cuts heat and glare, keeps the view and lets air through. Privacy fabric suits sides that face neighbours, and waterproof fabric suits the side that takes the worst rain. Many homes mix fabrics across one alfresco.

Can you see through zip screen mesh at night?

Mesh gives daytime privacy because it is brighter outside than in. At night, with the alfresco lights on, people outside can see in more easily. If you entertain after dark near close neighbours, choose a privacy fabric for that side.

Which zip screen colour is easiest to see through?

Darker colours such as charcoal and dark grey are the easiest to see through, which keeps the view clearer and cuts glare off water. Lighter colours reflect more heat but look more solid from inside. Colour rarely changes the price much.

Are zip screens available in clear PVC?

Clear PVC is the material used in cafe blinds. It keeps the view in the rain but lets the sun and heat straight through and gives no privacy. CBI Blinds makes zip screens in sunscreen mesh, privacy and waterproof fabrics, and can compare both at your measure.

Does waterproof zip screen fabric get hot?

Waterproof fabric blocks rain completely but does not breathe, so it can trap heat once the sun comes back out. That is why many homes use it only on the most exposed side and keep sunscreen mesh elsewhere.
